Abstract
Objectives£ºThe purpose of this study was to find the difference of the level of ambivalence between patients with schizophrenia and normal controls, and relationship between the level of ambivalence and other clinical characteristics in patients with schizophrenia.

Methods£º50 patients with schizophrenia and 50 normal controls were recruited. We compared the ambivalence score between two groups using the Korean version of Schizotypal ambivalence scale. We measured positive and negative symptom scale score, Beck depression inventory score and investigated duration, subtypes of schizophrenia. The patients were divided into two groups according to ambivalence scale score and the clinical symptoms were compared between the highly ambivalent and the less ambivalent group.

Results£ºAmbivalence scale score in the patient group was higher than those of the control group. The highly ambivalent group showed significantly greater positive symptom score than less ambivalent group. However, no significant differences in other symptoms including depressive symptom were found.

Conclusions£ºThis study supports the hypothesis that ambivalence may be the primary symptom of schizophrenia not associated with depressive symptom. And also, this study suggests that ambivalence may be associated with positive symptom.
